The Issue - CERTIFICATION OF COUNCIL
The Texas Municipal League offers elected officials the opportunity to learn about their governance roles and city government through a variety of educational opportunities.
On November 8, 2022, the city of Princeton residents voted to approve the Home Rule Charter making Princeton a Council-City Manager (Home Rule) form of local government. One of the benefits of Home Rule is that local decisions are made by the residents through the city council. This puts a lot of responsibility on the city council members.
The basic qualifications to run for a city council seat are 1. Qualified voter of the city. 2. Not less than 21 years of age. 3. Must have been a resident for at least 12 months. Currently it is the council members’ choice to understand and learn governance.
This petition is to add the requirement that all city council members complete the Texas Municipal League Certification Program for Elected City Officials; to start within the first month of office and be completed within the first year.
This is a way we can safeguard Princeton.
Amendments to the charter can only be done every 2 years, now is the time.
If any part of this/these CHARTER ITEMS shall be found in violation of state code at any time by a valid court of law outside of the City of Princeton, only that portion of the item found of violation may be modified if possible or stricken if necessary, as ordered by that court of law. Any remaining portion of that item shall NOT be modified or removed and shall remain valid and intact.
